It was the end of October and everybody was getting ready for Halloween. The Theatre Company was also in town and was going to put on a special production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. One of the Theatre helper’s was a young girl called Abbie. She was helping the men put the stage together when she saw a man dump a brown sack in an ally and ran off. Abbie didn’t think twice about it, until she thought she saw the bag move. She allowed her curiously to get the better of her as she opened the bag. She let out a squeal of delight as she pulled out a small, skinny, gray kitten. The thing was so small that she fitted in to the palm of her hand. Abbie stoked the kitten with two fingers gently and the small kitten began to purr gently.
Some of the other helpers and actors came over and saw the kitten and asked Abbie where she got it!
"She was just dumped!" said Abbie as if she had just ate something bitter.
"Well, I think we’ve found our Graymaulkin!" said one of the actresses who was playing one of the witches.
"Graymaulkin?" asked Abbie confused.
"Yes, Graymaulkin. It’s in the first part of the script! And I quote: I come, Graymaulkin. Graymaulkin just means gray cat."
"Oh! Gray cat! Yes I like that! It’s suites you!" said Abbie as she held the kitten up high. The little kitten meowed.
"Maybe she hungry? You best feed her warm milk Abbie…The poor little thing looks to young to even be away from it’s mother!" said Tom who was playing Macbeth.
"Mother? I want my Mum," said Gray cat but to the humans it just came out as either meow.
The play was a big success, and everyone believed it was thanks to Graycat since everyone stocked her or pattered her head before going out.
Soon the play was over and the Theatre Company closed until next year. Abbie looked after Gray and put a collar around her next giving Abbie’s name and address. She made sure that Gray had all her injections before letting her go out. When Gray had the last injection she hissed at Abbie and when they got home hid under her bed and refuse to come out for two days. When Abbie finally got Gray out from under her bed she told Gray that she could go out side.
"Ok Gray, You can go outside now…just don’t get lost!" said Abbie
"Don’t worry I won’t!" purred Gray as she leapt from Abbie’s arms and out of the door. Gray wondered thought the streets and allies hoping to find other cats to play with. It was soon getting dark and Gray knew she had to be getting back. She turns a corner and went down a street only to find a dead end. She soon realised that she was lost and began to cry. Around the same corner came a large elderly cat with a small grey tabby, boy kitten at his side. It was the boy who first noticed Gray cat, his little heart melted when he saw her tears and went over to her and nuzzled her. Gray stopped her crying and looked at the little grey tabby. He was very handsome with nice brown eyes.
"What’s your name?" he asked her
"Gray cat…what’s yours? "
"I’m Munkustrap, and this is my dad Old Deuteronomy. We’re Jellicles"
"What’s a Jellicle?" Gray asked
"We’re a group of cats that live in the junkyard," said Deuteronomy " What group do you belong to?"
"Group? I don’t belong to any group…I belong to Abbie, who will be angry, if I don’t come home" said Gray and she began to cry again.
"Oh, please Gray don’t cry I don’t like to see you cry" said Munkustrap as he nuzzled her again.
"It’s ok kitten, I think I know where your own lives, We’ll take you home" said Old Deuteronomy
As he picked up Gray in is mouth and cared her all the way home. The back door was open so Gray could come in; She said Good bye to Deuteronomy and Munkustrap and was about to go in side when Munkustrap came to her.
Come out tomorrow, I’ll be waiting and I’ll take you to meet the Jellicles! Would you like that?"
"Oh yes please!" said Gray happily and she kissed Munkustrap gently on the cheek and ran inside.
The next day seemed to drag for Gray cat. She wanted Abbie to come home from school and let her out to play. So to try and pass the time she decided to play with her ball of string. When Abbie finally got home she let Gray out, and sure to his word Munkustrap was there. But he wasn’t alone. Next to him was a black and brown kitten who was just starting to grow his mane. He was really good looking but in Gray’s eyes Munkustrap was better.
"You weren’t kidding bro, she really is pretty!" said the brown and black cat as he came forward "Hi, I’m the Rum Tum Tugger, but just call me Tugger"
"Hello Tugger, I’m Gray cat, but just call me Gray. Hello Munkustrap!"
"Um…. Hi Gray…. I didn’t think you would remember my name," said Munkustrap shyly
"Come on Gray, Let me and my brother give you the tour." Said Tugger as he took Gray’s paw and led her to the Junkyard. When at the Yard Tugger introduced Gray to the other kittens. There was Mongojerrie and Rumpleteazer, Mistoffelees, Plato, Alnozo and many others. Munkustrap grow red with jealously.
"Tugger, I invited Gray here as MY guest not yours! I want to take her on the tour!" moaned Munkustrap
Tugger turned angry at his brother "Stop complaining, if you want to take her on the tour do it!" said Tugger as he sulked off.
"I’m sorry about my brother, he can be a terrible bore sometimes! Come on I’ll show you the sites, that even Tugger wouldn’t take you" said Munkustrap excitedly as he took Gray by the paw and led her out of the Junkyard and in to a dark ally.
"The adults don’t let us come here for some reason, but I come her and bury my treasure…would you like to see?" asked Munkustrap
"Oh yeah!"
"You got to promise never to tell!"
"I promise!"
Behind a trash can Munkustrap pulled out a bag of catnip. Gray’s eyes gleamed, she had never saw so much catnip in all her life.
"Would you like some it’s really good!" said Munkustrap as he pushed the bag closer to her
Gray blushed " We’ll share it"
"Correction, neither of you will have it!" came a voice behind them. It was another kitten, but he was orange with black strips.
"Leave us alone Macavity! Or I’ll tell my dad!" said Munkustrap as he ran in fount of Gray.
"That’s right Munkustrap, go and tell Daddy" Said Macivity mockingly "Just give me the catnip and I won’t tell my dad that you were in the forbidden ally"
"Do you want to fight Macivity?" As Munkustrap released his claws.
"You got it!" said Macivity as he clawed Munkustrap’s eyes and blinded him. He then pushed them both over and run of with the catnip.
"I can’t see!" cried Munkustrap
"Oh don’t cry Munkustrap please, You’ll mess up your beautiful coat" purred Gray as she nuzzled him
"You think I have a nice coat?" purred Munkustrap back
"Yes, Now let’s get you back to the Junkyard. You took me home last night and now it’s my turn to return the favour! Hold on to my collier and I’ll led you"
Gray led him back to the Junkyard where a gumbie cat called Jennyanydots looked at his eyes.
"He’ll be fine in a day or two, but tell me Munkustrap how did it happen?"
"Munkustrap panicked! He knew he’ll be punished if he told them that he was in the forbidden ally.
"He went in to a bit of barb wire!" said Gray
"He did? Well, Munkustrap you’ll just have to be careful next time!" said Deuteronomy
"Yes father" said Munkustrap sheepishly
"And as for you Gray Cat…how would you like to be a Jellicle?" asked Deuteronomy
"I would be honoured" said Gray
"Munkustrap, your to teach Gray everything about our ways and about the Jellicle ball" said Deuteronomy
"It would be an honour!" said Munkustrap as he and Gray nuzzled together as the first rays of sunlight came though.
The end.
