William Martin Berry operated a merchandise store in Kingston before the Civil War. He enlisted in the Confederate forces, but as the war tore the civil government apart in northwest Arkansas, he moved his family to Texas where he remained until the end of the war.
He had returned to Roseville, AR and operated a successful business in a partnership with his half brother, Dallas Yell Berry. The cause of the decline of business in Roseville, AR was due to transportation. In the early years merchandise was transported by the river ferry, then with the entry of the railroad, Iron Mountain Railroad to Ozark, businesses moved to Paris, Arkansas and Dallas Yell Berry moved to Charleston, AR.
In the 1880's, he moved his family to Oregon, there he died in the 1905. His father, John Berry had also been a merchant, as well as served a State representative in Madison Co., Alabama and in Arkansas. One of his uncles, James H. Berry was later Governor and Senator of Arkansas.
The Paris Express, dated 13 Nov 1930, “Message received this week by James Clifton Berry, conveying news of the death of his sister, Mrs. John Quinn who died at her home in Stockton, CA, Nov 1st. Mrs. Quinn will be remembered by all her friends in Paris and Roseville”.
