Riley became head of the family at 10 years of age when his father died. His dad left him with the order to care for his mother and Riley did. Riley was energetic and a people-person. He had his own blackshop, raised cattle, hogs, chickens, a garden, fuit trees, sugar cane, corn and cotton. He resoled shoes. He was also an overseer on road work, ran for county judge in 1938-1939. He was ordained Cumberland Presbyterian minister on 29 Feb 1920. In physical appearance, he had a long, black beard, then shaved it and left a mustache.

Tennie worked on a spinning wheel, washed on a old crank washer.
Wilmer Foster, son of Druey Denton Foster, stated, "He worked in the mines and worked on the farm raising cotton on the old homestead of Zopher Foster's across from "Dent's house". He took cotton to Subiaco and provided seeds for the cattle to eat."
