David Jackson Selph moved his family from northern Mississippi in 1871 and headed for Indian Territory in a covered wagon. The family had to stop due to one of his daughters becoming ill on the trail.
The children attended school in Ellsworth. The family joined the Mt. Pleasant Cumberland Presbyterian Church where David Jackson was an elder.
Jane Newman was described as a sickly person and finally succumbed to her illness in 1875. She was buried near the farm where the family had planned a family plot.
