James was a farmer & teacher, lived in Johnson Township, Logan Co., AR. He served in the Civil War, enlisted in Company B, under Captain H. Butts, in 1863, he served nine months and was discharged. He constructed cotton gins, owned 240 acres of land, 75 acres cultivated, primary crops being corn and cotton. James and Martha were members of the Missionary Baptist Church, and James was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
