James, before leaving Chattanooga, Tennessee to Arkansas, had sold his slaves and had bought cattle. He drove the cattle down the Arkansas River to Clarksville, Johnson Co., AR in 1850. After 1852, he moved to Shoal Creek, Logan Co., AR


James bought 160 acres of land, dug wells, planted orchards, corn, wheat, oats, and cotton.

In 1862, James served in the Confederate Army, Company B, 16th Army Infantry. In the calvary, he was engaged in the Battle of Elkhorn, Corinth (leg wounded), in the Price Raid through Missouri. He was a prisoner of war and retained in Rock Island, IL for 5 months, then transferred to Richmond until evacuation.


Joseph Easterly Bennett served as a Private and a Captain in Company B and C, for the 4th Calvary, Union, at age 26, from Marion Co., TN, Enlisted on the 18th Nov 1863, Dardanelle, AR. Information provied by the pension application from the book by Desmond Walls Allen.
