Thomas moved with his parents at an early age to Rutherford County, North Carolina. He was educated in Iredell County and became a Presbyterian minister at the age of 33. He was assigned to pastor churches in Franklin County, Georgia. In late 1817, his family met a wagon train headed west from the Carolinas and joined them. While traveling through St. Clair County, his granddaughter Betsy Ann Ash fell from a wagon and suffered an injury that resulted in her death. Because the parents could not bear to leave her, they decided to stay and homestead the land near her grave. From St. Clair, Alabama Heritage Book.
