Memoirs on John Lee are related by Reason L. "Babe" and Martha Lee, "recalling the story of Uncle John's close shave with Civil War bushwhackers. The outlaws threatened to hang John Lee unless he told where his money was hidden. He was 80 years old at the time and scarcely able to defend himself, but his daughter, Harriet, ran outside and attacked one of the men who held the handrope. Apparently she impressed the leader, for he said, "If you can't whip a woman, let that ole man alone!" and they mounted and rode away."

"J. H. Trusty Petition for Letters Administration Estate John Lee This day is presented to the court the petition of J. H. Trusty letters of administration upon the state of John Lee sv deceased upon hearing said petition, and upon examination, had in the (__?__) the consent each find that the said John Lee sv died in Logan County Arkansas if which he was a resident on or about the 23 day of October 1882, without having made a will. That the probable value of this personal estate is about seven hundred and fifty dollars. That the heirs of said descendant are Harriett Robins a daughter, Levina Smith and Martha J. Trusty granddaughters, and the heir of Mrs. S. Thompson, his daughter. Fidelia, who resides in Logan County, Arkansas and James Lee a son who resides in the State of North Carolina.

The court (each ?) further find that said J. H. Trusty has executed a good and sufficient bond as administrator of said estate in the sum of fifteen hundred dollars with J. R. Maddox and H. B. Trusty as securities which said bond (__?__) the court examined and approved.

It is accordingly considered and ordered by the court that the said J. H. Trusty be and he is hereby appointed administrator of the estate of the said John Lee sv and that he have letters of administration under the seal of the court."
