"Julia Ann Hardgraves first husband at age 14, was Thomas Davis. He traveled extensively, and on his return he would give Julia money. She hid her money in the toe of her slipper which she kept under the bed. One day Tom rushed her from the house saying he had some temporary trouble and she would have to leave home without him. They harnessed the horses and hitched to a wagon. She set out for Arkansas. She looked back and the cabin was burning and so was her money. She did learn of Tom's thieving."

"She told her grandchildren of the stories of crossing rivers, including the Red River, when the water was so high the horses swam across. The wagons floated. At 17, and in Indian Territory, she camped with the Indians. She learned how the Indians protected their food stores from being robbed by bushwhacers by burying it. She would tell her grandchildren she was a Cherokee Indian."

"She met and married Ned Lee. He farmed the land, raised sheep and cattle, a good father and provider. Julia and Ned had twelve children but raised six, due to her children dying young."

"All of her children were muscially inclined. Wilson was a fiddler, and Charles, James and John performed solos over the party phone line by requests of the people of the community."

"In her later years, Julia lived alone, raised bees, kept a garden, milked the cows, and walked to her family and friends homes, knitting as she went along. She made trips to Henryetta, Claremore, and Enid, OK to see her kin. She wore a black dress with a pen-checked apron bordered with crossstitch, black shoes and a black taffeta bonnet. Her grandchildren remarked on her discipline. She never spoke harshly but often called them "honey" and cautioned them "Do take care"."

"Iva Jaggers was close to Julia who use to light her clay pipe. In advancing age, Julia became blind due to a disease called Trachoma. This disease destroys the cornea over time."

"In her declining years, she was living with Leona Lee Clinton at Hunttown, Johnson Co., AR, dying on 28 Feb 1922." From the book, A History of the Hardgraves Family, 1500-1986 by Cecil E. Hardgraves.
