Poetry - Mask

Mask

Everyone wears a mask,
Something to hide their true face,
A false look for protection,
Or something to fill an empty space.

I wear a mask, like everyone else.
None know the person behind it,
I’ve hidden my face so well,
That my mask is permanent.

I use it to hide behind,
To conceal my feelings
of pain, fear, love.
Trust me, I know their meanings.

People may see my face,
Yes, I may be smiling,
But if you remove the mask,
You can tell by the tears I’m crying.

It’s only when I’m alone
That my mask falls away,
The fears, pain and tears spill over,
Then I pick up my mask, and go my way.

I’ve learned to play the part so well;
Happy, fun filled, and free,
But because of the mask
No one knows the real me.
