Poetry - They Never Said Good Bye

They Never Said Good Bye

We were children not long ago -
That childhood was covered in snow.
We grew up overnight -
That was too fast, it was not right.
I watched childhood die,
And all I could do was cry.

A hail of violence - a rain of tears -
Now empty halls and silent fears.
In a few moments it was done -
Now the snow covers the sun.
I sit here and cry
For those who watched them die.

As snow covers the ground
Silence is the only sound.
We were left with so much pain inside -
A pain that we can never hide.
We were left with the question - Why?
Why do children have to die?

Time may pass, memory may fade,
Hopefully changes will be made.
But so many lives were torn apart -
And pain and memory reside in the heart.
And I will forever cry
For they never got to say "Good Bye."

Dedicated to the memory of those children who died at Columbine High School, Littleton Colorado, April 20, 1999.
May their souls find peace in heaven.
