Poetry - Lonely Angel

Lonely Angel

I saw a lonely angel today -
But I did not know her as such,
She looked just like you and me.

Dressed in blue-jeans and black boots,
Golden hair blowing in the wind,
The tails of her trench coat following.

Her heart shone through her sky like eyes,
so filled with pure beauty and kindness.
Yet a sadness lived there.

I sat watching her in this peaceful place,
She didn’t see me as I followed -
Such a solemn look for one so young.

Why would an angel come to a place such as this?
Why should she care about these poor souls? -
At lest she brought this place some life.

She looked about her and set to work
Picking up trash, righting toppled flowers -
I smiled at her, but she did not see.

The crows all laughed at her,
they knew no living soul cared about her work -
but she did not mind at all.

She finished quickly and looked about.
I approached to thank her,
But she did not hear me.

I placed a gentle hand on her shoulder,
I felt, could hear her heat beat -
While mine had stopped long ago.

I faced my angel, eye to eye,
Her blue eyes saw right through me.
But I saw myself in her eyes.

I said “Thank you” - she said a prayer,
“May your souls rest in pace”
Then she turned to go.

A soft wind blew through the trees,
And then she smiled - lighting this lonely place,
Then the light faded and the angel was gone.

To the living world she was an "average" girl,
to me she was my saving angel -
simply because I saw her smile.

She returned to her life, I to the grave.
I have never seen an angel from heaven,
Never heard that choir sing.

But I have seen a lonely angel,
With golden hair and blue-jeans,
Whose smile brightened the while cemetery.
