Origins of Tarchanna

Sometimes, during hours of darkness,
we can see what truly matters.
The light of day often blinds us to
what was in front of our noses all along.
-Lissane Norman

The beginnings of this program are shrouded in mystery. That means Paul and me thought it up at about two a.m. one Saturday night, in May (?) 1998. We had just read Marshall T. Savage’s excellent book "The Millennial Project", and we were discussing how stupid everyone else on the planet was. Inevitably (for us), the conversation turned to "Well, why don’t we go to a different one?" We have both been very interested (read fixated) in space travel for a long time, but this was the first real thought of making our own space program. It was the inspiration from "The Millennial Project" that made this seem possible, not to mention necessary. At first we wanted to only have a few people to come with us, but, even in the middle of the night, reality asserted itself and we decided to start a whole organization.
Well, when we woke up the next day, we reconsidered the problem in the sane light of morning, and, to our amazement, found it just could work. Our planning was hampered for a while by my move to Lebanon and the ensuing chaos, and we found our communication cut to a single thread of email. After a couple of months of planning and research, we hit on the idea of making a website. And here it is, in it’s third reincarnation.

This account is true, but it is also somewhat satirical and slightly exaggerated. It does not detail the ensuing 20-something months of planning, research, discovery, screw-ups, and desperate struggles with stubborn scanners. Go back to the main page

Or, if you haven't already seen the first two links, go to Marshall Savage's Site, the person who wrote the Millennial Project.
