SCOUTING REPORT--info from Hockey Scouting Report
The Finesse Game
"In many ways, Simon is the prototypical NHL fourth-line winger. He has made his reputation with his toughness, but has shown an added dimension in his ability to make plays that result in points. Whenever he does, jaws drop and observers wonder, "Where did that move came from?" They shouldn't be so dumbfounded. After all, Simon gets a lot of room, which gives a player with modest skills more time to make a play. Simon has decent hands for a big guy, but all of his successes come in tight. Lack of quickness is a major drawback. If he gets a regular shift, he will answer the questions about his consistency and might produce some surprising numbers, but there are a couple of steps he has to take to reach that level."
The Physical Game
"Simon is as tough as they come and has a wide streak of mean. He has already established himself as a player who can throw them when the time comes, and opponents have to keep a wary eye on him because they never know when he's going to snap."
The Intangibles
"Injuries again played a major role in Simon's season. The Caps think highly of him as a competitor, and it would be interesting to see what he could do if he stays intact here for a full season."
Projection
"Now that he has some confidence, 20 goals and 40 points may be in his range over the course of a full season. Few NHL players are able to combine that kind of production with Simon's brand of toughness."
