Now Some Facts About The Real Dugong!***A dugong is a large marine mammal that inhabits the tropical waters of the Indian and western Pacific oceans. It is also known as a sea cow. The dugong's body is about 8 to 9 ft long and thins to a forked, horizontally flattened tail. The forelimbs are rounded flippers. It has no hind flippers. Large, muscular lips are used for tearing off water plants. Molars and hard pads at the front of the jaws grind it's food. The male also has two small, tusklike incisors, sorta like miniature walrus tusks. It feeds mostly at night and dugongs commonly travels in pairs or in small groups. This harmless sea mammal has long been hunted for its meat, blubber, oil, and hide. The world population of dugongs is believed to be less than 40,000. They are now classified as endangered. Dugongs were sometimes viewed by early sailors as mermaids.
