Ultima I chronicles the reign of the evil wizard Mondain, the very first Ultima villain. It's an old game now, but a good one. What's really different about this one is the existence of four continents. This is also the only game in the Age of Darkness with color graphics.
Ultima I is pretty straightforward if you know what to do. First things first. You start in the Lands of Lord British, near the castle. Go inside and accept his quest, and give him money to get hit points. Leave, go to Paws directly north of the castle, and steal a weapon. If you're lucky, you can get a blaster on the first try. If not, keep trying until you do. Notice the layout of the town. There are a few other ones like this, and when you see one, it's a good place to steal food, armor, or weapons because the guards can't get to you unless you let them. You can try and steal a reflect suit here, too. If you get caught, leave and come back. When stealing food, waiting a few seconds before pressing the s button again seems to lessen the chances of getting caught, and you can steal more food. Eventually when you get more experience and charisma, it's more economical to pay for things than steal them. You can't steal vehicles or magic. Prices are lowest when you have 99 charisma and are a space ace. Kill everything in the countryside to get lots of money. When a king gives you a quest, it's always to find a signpost or kill a creature in dungeon. Don't bother to buy frigate to travel to the other continents, just steal a blaster and buy a raft, and you're set. Whenever you see a signpost, enter it because it raises your attributes, completes a quest if you visited the right castle, or gives you an item. To complete the dungeon quests, get plenty of ladder-ups and ladder-downs and use them to move in the dungeons. Always get lots of hit points from the kings first, and do a lot of surface combat to gain experience.
