Sweet Harmony

Backstreet Boys Lead the Pack of New Guy Groups

By Elizabeth Meyers

Whatever you do, don't call the Backstreet Boys an overnight success. "We've been at this for five years," Kevin Richardson says. "And we want people to know how hard we've worked and what it's taken to get here." Well, do tell.

Three of the Boys -- Nick Carter, Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean -- met in Orlando, Fla., in 1993 after they kept running into each other at various acting auditions. To pass the time while waiting in line, the three started doo-wopping and decided their voices sounded pretty good together. They hired a manager, who suggested they go from three-part harmony to five. That's when Richardson came in, bringing his cousin Brian Littrell along for the ride.

Soon they were signed to Jive Records and their single "We've Got It Going On" hit the airwaves. The poppy R&B song fizzled in America but sizzled overseas. So the Boys toured abroad, where they became the darlings of Europe.

Nearly two years later, America seems to have caught on to the Backstreet phenomenon. Their self-titled CD on Jive Records is on the Billboard Top 10, their single "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" is a huge hit and, in what can only be called the crowning glory of coolness, the group just appeared on Saturday Night Live.

react met with the guys in a New York City restaurant recently to talk about their success and their U.S. tour, which kicks off on July 8. To say they're excited would be an understatement. And why not? Finally, the Backstreet Boys are the toast of their own turf.
