Barnacles are all marine and the only sessile group of arthropods.
Most are hermaphroditic, but cross fertilization is the rule (See Brusca
p. 653 fig. 31D). in a few species of Balanus there are dwarf males
which attach to the female.
There are 6 pairs of biramous thoracic appendages used for feeding called cirri. Barnacles were once thought to be mollusks due to their tough exoskeletons.
It wasn't until the larval stages were studied that we realized that barnacles
were true crustaceans.
