If you give a person a bad reputation, it will remain for ever and end all chances of his reestablishing himself as a respectable man. Most slanderers are not aware of his. They may utter their slanderous remarks simply because they have been offended by the person slandered by them or because are envious of his success. However, untrue the charges may be, they may damage permanently the reputation of the person and so hand him. Slanderers must be aware of the horrible nature of their offence. And men of repute must be doubly aware of this.
