Horace, the oldest son,(my great grandfather) went to Texas with a wagon train when he was 19.He told stories to my dad about the journey. He mentioned the bullwackers killing prairie
chickens with their whips as they made their way along the trail. They would give the prairie chickens to the ladies to pluck and they would be that nights meal. This may be where Horace got his reputation as being very handy with a whip.My dad tells of him being able to break a beer bottle with a 25 ft. team line when he was 65-70.He also mentioned them running low on water in Kansas and coming to a well where the owner charged 25 cents for a pail of water. He said the oxen could soak up a lot of water when they were thirsty.Horace went into Chihuahua County,Mexico and attempted to ranch.Due to the political climate in Mexico during this time he was not sucessful. He was chased out of Mexico twice. The first time he managed to get out with his livestock and belongings. When things cooled down he returned only to be chased out again .This time he only managed to get out with his saddle horse so he did not attempt to return.Horace returned to Nebraska and homesteaded in Hitchcock County in 1890 and proved up in 1895..For more information on the early settlers to Hitchcock County Nebraska go to:EARLY NEBRASKA SETTLERS IN HITCHCOCK COUNTY
