COACH’S CORNER

(NOTES FROM CINDY)

SENIORS

We are back into the groove and doing a fine job. Work outs will be quality until a week out from J.O.’s, then we will take some rest. So be in the water at 2:30 and we will be done by 4:15, excluding the distance swimmers, (sorry Jess, Amy & Liz). If you have not qualified to swim J.O.'s’ be prepared to swim relays. I will let you know.

Our Senior Swimmer of the Month is JESSICA FAULKNER! Congratulations Jess.

Robert Roosa will be coming home this summer to train and will represent AST at the Olympic Trials. Many other college swimmers will be home training with the possibility of a few more Olympic trials swimmers coming in, and maybe a few more swimmers qualifying for Olympic Trials.

JR. NATIONALS

AURORA SWIM TEAM finished 27th at JUNIOR NATIONALS with Quincy Schmidt finishing 1st and 5th in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and Emily McCoy scoring16th and 10th in the 50 and 100 free. There were 175 teams competing in the meet. Quincy set 2 State Records: 56.78 & 205.32 and gave the crowd 2 thrilling races. Congratulations to both swimmers, along with the relay team of Erin King, Emily McCoy, Alissa Nagel and Julie Tibor.

Dear Aurora Swim Team Family members and friends,

Recently we have said Goodbye to one of our dearest family members Suzanne Weller (Emily McCoy’s mother). We have set up a fund in her memory, to plant a tree along the coastal trail where Suzanne spent countless hours running, walking and enjoying nature. We will be putting the remaining money into a fund to ensure Emily’s ability to travel home for the holidays, to be with her father Kevin and her brother Conner during the next year. Emily will be attending Brown University this fall.

You can send a check made out to AST Memorial Fund

And mail it to:

Aurora Swim Team

P.O. Box 220008

Anchorage, AK 99522

Suzanne’s love of family and life was so evident while she was here with us. We will forever hold her close in our hearts and use her strength as a benchmark, as we move forward with our own lives.

Cindy

THANKS

To all AST swimmers, parents and friends for their crowd support for our swimmers. In 24 years of coaching, with countless swim meets and national competitions under by belt, I have never been a part of anything so exciting!

Again, Thank you.

PRE-SR GROUP

Hey Group,

What an exciting meet! Congratulations to Quincy and Emily for such great accomplishments in swimming. Group, take advantage of having such outstanding swimmers and wonderful people on our team. Take some time to talk with them and listen and learn from what they have to say. Congratulations again!

My heart and prayers go out to the McCoy family and Emily.

Region XII was a wonderful meet. We had a lot of best times and we qualified 4 different finalists. Laura Smith placed 5th in the 50 breaststroke. Jenna Mayra was 2nd in the 100 back, 6th in the 50 free, 8th in the 100 & 200 free. Robbie Smith was 3rd in the 50 free, 6th in the 100 back, and 2nd in the 100 free. Gilbert Raposa was 2nd in the 200 breast, and 1st in the 100 breast. Jordan Stephens and Bronwen Nicholls both had all best times.

Group, remember we have J.O.’s in the middle of April. Take some of the excitement of Junior Nationals and apply to you swims at J.O.’s. Let’s show everyone how wonderful and fast Aurora Swim Team is. Our Group’s Swimmer of the Month is:

BRONWEN NICHOLLS!

Congratulations, Bronwen!

BLUE GROUP

NOTES FROM JOHN

Hi all,

This last month we had the privilege of hosting the Speedo junior National West swimming championship at Bartlett Pool. This meet was a wonderful opportunity to see some of the best young swimmers in the nation. My favorite moment was watching Quincy Schmidt swim to victory in the 100 breaststroke! It was incredible!

I would like each of you to think about what you like the most about swimming. Maybe you enjoy swimming in meets, or you like learning new backstroke or freestyle drills. Whatever it is, write it down on paper and bring it to practice, and we will talk about it.

The Blue/Gold Swimmer of the Month is:

ASHLEY McCLAIN!

Ashley has been coming to almost every practice, and has been working hard. She also does difficult sets without ever complaining! Good job Ashley!

WHITE GROUP

(Notes from Tim)

Hello White Group,

It’s finally April and spring is here. I am pleased with how workouts have been lately. You may have noticed practice is getting a little bit harder. You might see more 100’s in practice or fast 50’s instead of 25’s. It may seem like a lot of work, but you have to do it if you want to go a little bit faster. It takes effort in practice if you want to swim 5 seconds faster at the swim meet. It is a good thing for each of you to know what your best times are. That way when you go to the swim meet you can try to better your time. The Swimmer of the Month is ASHLEY NOONAN. Ashley always tries her best and seems to like doing the hardest events at swim meets. Congratulations to Ashley and the rest of AST White for all the swimming you do.

Coach Tim

SPEEDO JUNIOR NATIONAL WEST

FACTS:

This meet was by far the biggest and most prestigious swimming event ever to come to Alaska. There were two other Junior Championship Meets taking place simultaneously, event for event in Buffalo, NY, and Orlando FL.

There were approximately 175 Teams registered in the Anchorage Nationals from 18 states:

Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas. Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. There were approximately 700 swimmers participating in this meet, easily the largest number of athletes Alaska has ever hosted at a swim meet. AST qualified 2 individual event swimmers along with both a men’s and women’s relay for the first time. Both individual event swimmers, Emily McCoy and Quincy Schmidt either finaled, console finaled or bonus finaled in each of their individual events. Quincy Schmidt won the 100yd breaststroke race, a first for AST.

IMMEDIATE PAST-PRESIDENT’S CORNER

With Jr. Nationals behind us we look forward, as a Team to AST’s hosted meet the first weekend in May. The Splash into Spring meet has become a favorite with new and experienced swimmers alike. We will need volunteers, food items and support. You all did an excellent job with your participation at Jr. Nationals; we had involvement from almost all of our families! We know we can count on you to supply the necessary man-hours and items needed to make the Splash into Spring meet a success for AST. Be on the alert for flyers and phone tree messages to let you know how you can help.

Again, we congratulate all of AST’s members for the outstanding support displayed at the Jr. Nationals meet. Thank you all!

Lea Ann Allen

MARCH VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

VICKIE CABLE

Vickie did a wonderful job of heading up the Athlete Social committee. She spent many hours organizing food, decorations and volunteers to make this event a success, Which it was! There were over 300 swimmers who joined the party and thanks to Vickie and her crew, they had a great time!

If you know of someone who has helped and is not mentioned, please write a

FUND RAISING OPPORTUNITY

Gilbert Raposa now has Uncle Joe’s Pizza Coupons. These coupons sell for $12.00 and are good for ANY large pizza from Uncle Joe’s, (and he makes a MEAN PIZZA!). For each pizza sold, $4.00 goes back to the Team. If you have not already raised the $200.00 minimum in fundraising, you may raise it with the book sales, or the Uncle Joe’s Pizza coupons. If you have met the $200.00 minimum, then 70% of every $15.00 per Book, or 70% of the $4.00 per Pizza will go into your swimmer’s individual Travel account.

Please call Gilbert Raposa at 349-9443 to arrange to pick up books or Pizza coupons to sell. He usually has them in his car, so catch him in the parking lot or give him a call.

FYI

More Fund raising opportunities!

We are ready to reintroduce our Newsletter-Heat Sheet Ads Fundraiser. We will host up to two meets this coming swim season, (our first hosted meet will be the Splash into Spring meet the first weekend in May) and we plan to continue our monthly Newsletter. We offer local businesses very low cost advertising space in our Newsletter and Heat Sheets. If you would like to take advantage of this offer, please call Bonnie Schmidt at 345-0785. She will be able to give you information and order forms for the Ads.

SUGGESTION BOX

There were a few questions and suggestions:

Can goggles be donated to the Team for a tax deduction? AST has receipt forms available and you may fill in the donated item and it’s worth to report on you tax return.

It was suggested that we have a Baby Team Picture shot when our regular Team photos are done. This is a great idea. Bring your baby to the Team photo session, it usually comes up in May, but we will need someone to volunteer to head up the photo session and get the information out to our members. Any takers?

There was a question as to whether non-Team members can purchase items through AST. We have goggles and other items available for sale when our Team Store is open. Anyone can purchase items at that time. Please continue to ask questions and give suggestions, we welcome your input!
