Articles - 'War Games Ended In Tragedy'

A game of paintball ended in tragedy when a father-of-two died of a stroke after being shot in the neck. Kenneth Costin, 39, of Sandy, Bedfordshire, who had a history of migraine attacks, died 10 days after taking part in a paintball tournament.

Coroner David Morris recorded a verdict of misadventure at an inquest into Mr Costin's death.

< It is thought to be the first death associated with the sport in either the UK or the United States.

Speaking on Tuesday at Bedford Magistrates Court, the coroner said he attached no blame on the organisers of the event at Elsham in Lincolnshire on 21 January this year.

Mr Costin was a member of the seven-strong "Team Redz" who each paid £50 to take part in the tournament.

Mark Berry, a team-mate, told the inquest that Mr Costin was shot in the neck from just eight to 10 yards away during the game.

"Sometime later in the day Ken began to slur his words and complain that he wasn't able to move his fingers.

"We stopped him from playing because we thought he had hypothermia."

Paintball's velocity

Mr Costin's wife Christina said: "He came home and said he still felt numb. He said he had a headache and was going to bed."

He complained to his doctor but the following Sunday collapsed and was taken to hospital. He died three days later.

A post mortem revealed that Mr Costin suffered a major stroke probably triggered by the velocity of the paintball.

Dr John Xeureb, consultant neurologist at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, said: "I have listened to the evidence of the team and they sway me more with the link to paintballing.

"I think that was the start of the spasm that continued.

"The sudden movement being surprised by an attacker could have caused this."

Keen paintballer

Event organiser Steve Bull said he had made inquiries within the UK and USA and had found no deaths associated with the sport.

Recording his verdict, Mr Morris said he was satisfied it was the paintball game which led to Mr Costin's death.

"It was not the paintball itself but the general activity and engaging in that game that set off a chain of reactions.

"He did this of his own volition - an activity that he enjoyed and his movements on the day triggered off a migraine which became complicated."
