AVSim Base-Ketchikan Area Run

This flight was done in 4 legs. It took me 2.4 hours to complete, which was longer than I had expected, even in BFU's new Twin Otter. This was its maiden flight. Leg 1 was from AVSim Base to Ketchikan Int'l (PAKT); Leg 2 was from PAKT to Klawock (PAKW); Leg 3 was from PAKW to Steamboat Bay (WSB); and the last leg was from WSB back to AVSim Base. There were low-hanging broken clouds throughout this flight, which became a problem on the first leg.

I started the flight at 14:04. I was sitting at the top of runway 33L (the dirt strip) at AVSim Base, and I set up all of my instruments for the first VOR I would head off to, Level Island. Here I am at AVSim Base, with all of my instruments set, ready to take off:

I lifted off at 14:07, and here I am just after takeoff headed off towards the Level Island VOR:

I decided to cruise at 3500 for the first leg of the trip. After reaching the Level Island VOR, I turned to make a beeline for PAKT. Here I am cruising off towards PAKT, about 10 nm away from it.

Unfortunately, I had been a tad late turning, and I didn't realize I had gone past PAKT until I came up on BFUn. It must have been hiding under one of those clouds. So I turned around and entered downwind for runway 11.

After running a very small base leg, I turned final...

...and touched down smoothly.

I taxied a mile down the runway, then turned off and went the length of the taxiway. I pulled into the first parking space I came to, which was in front of the building there. In the background is the NAS setup.

After taking the checks and beer on board, I turned around (almost hitting the building), and taxied back to runway 11. I took off...

...and turned to heading 258 and went off towards Klawock. This leg took abuot 20 minutes, and here I am on downwind for runway 19 at PAKW.

Here I am on base:

And here I am after touchdown:

I used the parking area shown in that shot to turn around, and taxied back towards the other smaller area by the road.

After unloading in that building, where the recipient of one of the checks and a case of beer was waiting, I taxied back to the runway and took off.

The leg to WSB was very short, I didn't take 10 minutes do make it. Here I am, with Steamboat Bay off to the left.

So now you are saying, "You can't land that there! There's no runway!" Who said anything about a runway?

See? No problem here. In real life that would have been the side the dock was on, but I never found any sceneries for Steamboat Bay, and so I could make a beach landing in the new plane. After unloading the other check and the other case of beer, I turned around on the beach. Here I am ready to take off, back the way I landed (so what if the breeze is at my back, I'll be fine).

Here I am right after takeoff:

I set the heading knob to 312, and headed back to AVSim Base. Here I am when it came in sight:

I was perfectly lined up for the dirt strip, as it turned out, so I made a very nice landing, right in the middle of the runway.

I taxied to the end of the dirt strip, rolled off, turned and headed up towards Francoi's school, and parked and shut it down. It was 16:27 when I finished, longer than I expected from the Twin Otter. Oh yeah, it's good to go, I didn't find anything wrong with it, except for the contact points. I'll have to work on those, it looks like the plane is hovering above the ground by just a tad.
