Fall of Kabul in to the hands of Mujahedin

Mujahideen forces arrived in the city on April 28th 1992, claiming power from a Soviet-backed Afghan Government and banishing the last vestiges of communism into history.

The Afghan government formally ceded power to triumphant Islamic guerrillas in Kabul three days after mujahideen forces entered the capital, ending 14 years of armed resistance.

The structure of the former regime is officially abolished including its Cabinet, the National Assembly, the state security apparatus, the former ruling party (The Homeland Party (P)) and all laws and resolutions contrary to the Sharia (Islamic Law).

Mujahedeen started Looting of personal & public properties

The infamous warlord, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar immediately contested the new government that,his forces took up positions in the mountains surrounding Kabul proceeded to shell the city mercilessly. Within two days, inter-factional rivalry gave way to a new chapter of civil conflict and a siege of Kabul by the infamous warlord, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

Heavy fighting begun between the forces of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar & forces loyal to the new Afghan defense minister Ahmad Shah Masood. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar’s Party of Islam (Hezb-i Islami Hekmatyar) shelled the city, eventually leveling most of its neighborhoods which resulted in the deaths of over 50,000 civilians over the next 4 years.
