Mauser Accessories
As with any military rifle the K98k Mauser had accessories to help improve its function. Below is a description of some of these. Click on any detail image for a larger view. The K98k was equipped with a traditional blade bayonet. This was 15" overall with the 10" blood-grooved blade. The handle had a grip of either bakelite of wood. The sheath has a waffenampt on the tip. The frog is stamped with a code and year of manufacture. This example is on loan from the cousin Tracy's edged weapon collection. The Mauser had a cleaning rod stored under the barrel. My example does not have one, as the Russians left them out after refurbishment. The rod was either 10" or 12", depending on the manufacturer and year of production. A "tobacco can" cleaning kit held other items to go with the rod. It contained two brushes, a pull chain, takedown screwdriver, oil bottle, and a compartment for cleaning patches. The Mauser sling consisted of a leather strap, buckle, and keeper. The leather slap looped through the forward sling loop and back through the buckle, then through the hole in the butt. The keeper was then attached. The buckle had a leather cover on the inside to prevent marring the rifle's finish (center).
