Work Experience

  1. Teaching Arabic Language, Islamic Studies and Translation at Zayed University, Dubai since 1999.
  2. Taught Arabic Language in the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, University of Glasgow in ‘98-‘99.
  3. Compiled an Egyptian Arabic phrasebook for the Rough Guide in conjunction with Lexus Publishing April ‘98. This involved meeting deadlines, working under pressure, proofreading, co-ordinating with the translation manager and the typesetter.
  4. Taught Arabic Language in the Faculty of Divinity, University of Glasgow in ‘96-‘97. The main difficulty which I overcame was accommodating students at different levels by arranging extra tuition where necessary.
  5. Arabic Language Counsellor at Network Scotland (The National Helplines) since May ‘96. My duties include providing accurate information, phone skills, translating the updated information about the helplines into Arabic.
  6. Employed as an On-call Interpreter/Translator (Arabic/English/Arabic) at Strathclyde Interpreting Services since Nov. ‘94. This involves working under pressures, meeting deadlines (which always after short notice) and Arabic Typewriting.
  7. Taught Arabic Language as a Foreign language to students at Glasgow from Oct. ‘94-’96 (informal classes).
  8. More than two years experience in teaching Arabic Language and Islamic Studies in secondary schools in Egypt. This was my first job after graduation. It involved teaching Arabic Language to secondary school children, giving advice to them and training them on practical education.
  9. Presenter/Producer at a local ethnic radio station (Radio Ramadhan) during the month of Ramadan in Glasgow since 12th Jan. 1997. This was a voluntary post. My main objective was to select and produce programmes which were accepted to the Arab community in Glasgow.

I am familiar with various PC and Apple Macintosh software. During my university studies I have learnt to use:

  1. PC: Windows 95 (English/Arabic version), Unitype (Arabic), Aldus Pagemaker,
  2. Adobe (Pagemaker, Photoshop and Acrobat), Access and Excel

  3. Macintosh: Word for Macintosh, Clarisworks, and Filemaker
  4. HTML
  5. Internet: Capable to work online on various kinds of translation. I have my web site.

Activities

10/3/97 Organised the International Week at Glasgow University.

1/4/95 Organised a Course "Science, Islam and Muslims" at Glasgow University.

Other Information

  1. I won the sixth poetry prize in Egypt in 1991.

  2. I won the 1st and the 4th prize in Arabic Calligraphy at Alexandria University Fine Arts Exhibition.

Interests

I enjoy travelling, have been to various countries abroad and have gained many travel experience. This has opened up my mind to many different ideas and approaches to life. Having often travelled without fixed arrangements has taught me to negotiate and to be resourceful.

I have a keen interest in I.T. and have created my own web-site, databases, leaflets and posters.

Other interests include reading, Arabic calligraphy, football, squash and tennis.
