MUFON is the world's largest UFO organization. It was set up in 1969. It describes itself as a grass-roots organization in that the leadership and motivation comes from the local level. In North America, each region has a state or provincial directior who oversees the investigative activites of the field investigators. An international co-ordinator and seven continental co-ordinators work with foreign representatives and national directors in a number of countries. MUFON is no lightweight organization. It has a board of 21 directors, an executive committee that manages the organization and an extensive team of consultants, most of whom are MAs and PhDs drawn from a variety of fields. The organization publishes a monthly magazine, has an Internet page, organizes international conferences and provides field investigators with a manual.
