Howie was born in Orlando as the youngest member in his family. He has three sisters; Polyanna, Caroline and Angie. He has one brother, John. Howie is half Irish, half Puerto Rican, born in Orlando, home of Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios.
Sweet D-that's his nickname, was first introduced to show business by his sis, Angie. She is also in the field of entertainment. When Howie was seven, he was already singing, acting, dancing and performing at local theatres. He also got a role in the movie, 'Parenthood'.

The Backstreet Boys pulled out of a scheduled headlining slot at a radio sponsored show in Shakopee, Minnesota, on Sunday, September 13, 1998, after hearing that band member Howie Dorough's sister, Caroline, had died. She died of complications arising from lupus, a failrly mysterious skin disease that is exceptionally difficult to diagnose since its symptoms mirror numerous minor illnesses. She was only 37 years old. At first, the band planned to forge on and play the gig as a quartet, as Dorough immediately left to be with his family in Raleigh, North Carolina, according to The Associated Press. The Boys finally abandoned the concert and the 19,000 fans gathered at the "Last Chance Summer Dance" when the band -- who was already one-person short for the gig -- realized that one of the singers would not be able to catch a flight in from Tampa, Florida, in time for the show. The Backstreet Boys released a statement apologizing for the cancellation, and vowed to reschedule the appearance in the near future.
