Taphraya - Community Development (M.E.D.) (Project L.I.F.E)

The Project LIFE Foundation is the umbrella organization that mercy ministries in YWAM Thailand are under. LIFE works under the oversight of the Department of Public Welfare of the Royal Thai Government, and is funded from private donations both from within Thailand and overseas.

Our goals in LIFE are to present the "two-handed gospel" to the poor and needy of Thailand. Our desire is to enable them to know and fulfill God's purpose for their lives. We believe God's purpose includes every person having adequate housing, food & water, clothing, gainful employment, and education for their children. They should be able to obtain these things in a way that will help build their God given self esteem.

Rural Women's Development- Taphraya

Vegetables, fruit, flowers, weaving, these are just some of the ways Project L.I.F.E. Foundation assists in the fight against rural poverty. By developing these channels of income for housewives in poor villages, their families earn enough that the fathers don't have to leave the families to go to the cities to work during dry season.Families are the building blocks of any society, and Project L.I.F.E. Foundation is committed to keeping families together

The House of Refuge

We seek to assist the poor & needy with both rehabilitative as well as developmental help. "The House of Refuge" is a home for children that have been forced into prostitution, or have come from abusive living situations. Girls from 12 to 17 years of age can live in a family-like atmosphere, and have time to receive both physical and emotional healing that is necessary. They are also surrounded by the love of God, and most come to know Him before long. "The Shelter"is a similar ministry for heroin addicts, run in conjunction with HELP International. The goal of both ministries is that those who pass through them would be able to go out afterwards, live a successful Christian life, and be an important part of their communities.

Educational Sponsorship Program

Our Educational Sponsorship Program offers poor children in both urban slums and rural villages the opportunity to attend school. We believe that an education is one of the keys to helping them break the cycle of poverty that has held some of their families for generations. For about U.S $15 per month, you can be a part of helping a poor child move toward a better future. Contact our Bangkok office for more information.

Community Development (M.E.D.) - Taphraya

Villagers on the Thai-Cambodian border are some of the poorest in Thailand. With barely enough money to feed their families, many borrow money at high interest from local loan 'sharks' to plough fields, buy fertiliser, plant rice, etc. Irregular rainfall leads to an unreliable harvest, often leaving villagers with little or nothing to show for their efforts once loans have been repaid, if they can be repaid. Project L.I.F.E.'s M.E.D. (Micro-enterprise development) was created to help those villagers by giving an accessible alternative to high interest loans, thereby reducing villager's costs. The fund is available to villagers for any income-producing project, agricultural or otherwise. Over a 5 year time frame, 2 million baht worth of loans have been given out, with an 89% pay-back rate, better than the bank. As well as M.E.D., Project L.I.F.E. did short term training teach village women to sew. It was so successful, it turned into a full scale sewing program making school uniforms for rural schools. Over a 3 year period, over 2,000 uniforms have been made by the 5 village women in the program, providing valuable income for their poor families as well as low cost good quality uniforms for neighboring schools.

Historically speaking, Taphraya was the site of refuge camps in the 1980's. YWAM Thailand worked in these camps until the refugees were repatriated back to their own countries. Since that time, a church consisting mainly of ethnic Northern Khmer (Cambodian) people has been established in the district. YWAM Thailand continues to work with this church to strengthen and develop local leadership and is assisting in the areas of discipleship as well as income development.
