My Rose

I was once given a rose
A rose that never withered or crumbled.
For this rose was given to me by a mere boy of ten.
It was a cool Valentine's Day Year's ago.
And the rose was made of chocolate.
Rich chocolate that fills and sweetens the soul.
Chocolate that spoils your dinner.
That is defined as junk food, yet is loved by all.
Any kid would have loved to have this gift
And savor every last crumb.
But I didn't. Instead I vowed to myself and others...
I vowed that I was going to keep this gift.
I vowed to treasure it always.
Years later my promise has been kept.
Our friendship still lives on.
The rose lies on my dresser.
I never think of how the rose would've tasted
Or get mad at myself for wasting such a prize.
For now I am older
And the rose means more to me now
Than it ever could have meant to me as a child of ten.
