Alison had never acted in a play or movie when as a joke she went to a mass audition for the movie To Die For (1995) with some friends. Assuming she didn't get a part, her and her family took a vacation in the Bahamas. The casting directors of "To Die For" had trouble reaching her but in the end she landed the part that started her career.

Alison has recieved rave review for her acting in All Over Me, To Die For, and most recently, Boys Don't Cry.

How Alison was cast in All Over Me: "Folland was cast after an exhaustive four-month search. "We did a huge open call in New York City and 450 girls showed up," recalls producer Dolly Hall. "Then a friend of ours, who was working in the cutting room of the Gus Van Sant movie "To Die For," told us about Alison's performance in that movie. We watched a rough cut, and we knew we had found Claude."

She graduated on May 23, 1997 from Buckingham Browne & Nichol's at Sanders Theater in Harvard University.

Her mother is a travel agent.

Alison is a huge Janes Addiction fan.
