NAVARINO

Navarino was a 3-masted barque, 464 tons old measure, built at Cochin in India in 1808. She was 116’ 2˝” long, 29’ 9” wide and 5’ 9” ‘tween decks. In 1848 she was owned by G. Marshall of London. The Navarino arrived at Adelaide on 10 November 1848 under the control of Captain R.C. Paige having left London on 15 July 1848 and England (Plymouth) for the last time on 3 August 1848. This marked a significant voyage because the 200 steerage passengers were the first ordinary migrants to South Australia who had paid their own fare and who had not applied to the emigration authorities for an assisted passage (refer Parsons, Ronald., “Migrant Ships for South Australia 1836-1850”, Gould Books, Gumeracha, 1983 and South Australian Register, 15 November 1848, p.2).

Amongst these passengers were William Holmes, a 29 year old former Calais lace designer and his wife, Esther (nee Pepper), and four children including their son, William (born 1840), and daughter, Sarah (born in France in about 1842). Also on board were J. Pepper, wife and four children. They may or may or may not have had any connection with Esther. There was also a John Pepper aboard the Walmer Castle and members of another Holmes family aboard Harpley. Again there may be no connection.

Sarah Holmes married Tertius James Hannam at St John Church, Adelaide on 27 January 1863. She died at Dover St, Malvern in Adelaide on 23 April 1940, aged 97. Her youngest daughter, Elizabeth Maude Hannam married Charles Richmond John Glover at St Johns Church, Adelaide on 17 May 1900. Glover served as the last Mayor of Adelaide 1917-1919 and then as the first Lord Mayor of that city in 1919. He served as Lord Mayor again from 1923 to 1925 and yet again from 1930 to 1933.

The arrival of the Navarino was reported in the South Australian Register on Saturday, 11 November 1848, the ship having arrived the previous day. Her passengers were disclosed as Mr and Mrs France and four children; Miss France; Messrs Henry Constable; J Miller; C.J. Berry; W. Simpson; J.W. Walker (Surgeon Superintendent), in the cabin; John Watson; Pellot J.L. Hortslet; Ansell; Shanklin; A.L. Ely; E. Brettingham.
