Mat is certainly the jokester of Emond's Field. He is always messing around with things that he shouldn't be messing around with.
I personally think he's as anoying as s__t, excuse my french. He is constantly getting into trouble with gambling, stealing things he shouldn't (i.e. dagger in Shadar Logoth) he is the kind of person you don't want to hang around with. Although he means well, you don't need enemies when you have a friend like Mat.
