Box Families in America

Page Updated 21st. June 2000

There has been much researched and written about the Box families in America. I am very grateful to Lyn; Ves, (families 1 & 2); Annita, Betty, and all the researchers who have so willingly shared their work with me, and I will endeavour to record an overall picture of their work here.

It seems many Box families went to the Southern States of America in the early 1600, possible or probably to avoid religious persecution in England. One of the out-standing characteristics of the Box family members, both male and female, is their fierce independence and non-conformist attitudes to authority. This does not seem to lead generally to criminal activities, but more to freedom of speech and beliefs. Many were Methodist and Baptists Preachers, and in Sussex some were believed to be Quakers, not popular with Queen Elizabeth 1 policy of 'One Nation One Faith'

From 'The Complete Book of emigrants'; 'Order of Descendants of Ancient Planter'

"The term "Ancient Planters" is applied to those persons who arrived in Virginia before 1616, remained for a period of three years, paid their passage, and survived the massacre of 1622. they received the first patents of land in the new world as authorised by Sir Thomas Dale in 1618 for their personal adventure." One name on the list of descendants was John Box.

John Box, " Rope Maker", of Boston is said to have belonged to the English gentry, he was born in London in 1697. He first appeared in America in 1730 at Charlestown, where he asked for a settlement, he married Lydia Story. He was sometimes referred to as " Major", but no evidence of a military career has been found, although his brother was a naval commander in Egypt under Nelson. He was an active member of King's Chapel, --corner of School and Tremont St. Boston-- where he purchased pew no. 91 in the gallery, on the 19-3-1734, for 20 pounds. this indicates he was already married at that time.

From Lyn some Immigration Lists Index which might shed some light to someone.

We are aware if these records are correct John Box lived to be 140 !! We know many Box men have enjoyed a long life, but even so this must be questioned further research is continuing, and if any one out there can contribute to verifying or correcting this info please e-mail either Betty or myself, thank you.
