DAY 1:
The first day is the most interesting because it shows how everything has an effect on the outcome at the bank. It was funny to have Mulder in the bed, and not really know where it came from.
At the office, he and Scully actually had a pretty casual conversation, with Scully stuck on why he has a waterbed. What I want to know is why that meeting was so important. I mean, since when is the X-Files division included in a status meeting? Kind of off, there.
Then Mulder goes to the bank to deposit his check so that the one he wrote his landlord for the waterbed damage won't bounce. He stays calm during the robbery, taking it as more of a damper on his day than a dangerous situation. In Mulder's sarcastic words "Zip-adee-do-da". Mulder tells the robber to lock the door so Scully won't walk in the middle, but she does. Its almost a good thing, too, because she is there to hold Mulder when the robber shoots him. Scully remains as calm as possible, but you can see her shaking. When she can't get the robber's name, she suggests Steve. I wonder if there is a certain reason the writers chose Steve. He does tell Scully his real name -- Bernard -- before clicking the bomb and killing them twice.
DAY 2:
In this day, the small details are the only things to change. Mulder's bed still springs a leak, his cell phone still gets drowned in water, and he was to pay for damages done to the apartment below. Pam, Bernard's accomplice and the only person who appears to know that the day is being repeated, makes a half-hearted effort to stop Mulder from going to the bank by calling him. Unfortunately he doesn't answer.
Scully and Mulder's conversation at the office is less casual and more serious, centered around fate. Scully suggests that it may be fate, but in other episodes she has repetatively claimed not to believe in fate. Again, Scully is so stuck on Mulder having a waterbed, that while he is ranting about fate, she can only say "Since when did you get a waterbed?"
Scully takes the check to the bank so Mulder can make a presentation at the meeting (the one I still think is pointless), but he gives her the wrong part of the check. This time no one is shot, but Bernard still blows up everything and everyone.
DAY 3:
This time around, deja vu is entered in signifigantly. When the phone rings, Mulder knows that it's someone calling to say the ceiling is leaking from his waterbed.
Pam tries the hardest this time, even sneaking away from her tour to warn Scully not to go to the bank. I have gone on the tour before, and you are not near any elevators or offices, so it's pretty hard to get anywhere.
In any case, Mulder is still late for the meeting. Their conversation is less personal than the last time. They are still arguing -- this time on the probability of deja vu. When Mulder says he's going to the bank, Scully gets a little paranoid. Mulder says he'll use the ATM.
Just after he finds the ATM to be out of order, he sees Pam. She is frustrated from explaining to everyone, but Mulder gets the truth out of her. She convinces him not to go the bank, so he walks away. When he gets back to the FBI building, Scully is gone -- obviously to the bank. Mulder enters the bank in time to shoot Bernard, but he still has the bomb. He repeats in a hushed tone "He's got a bomb, he's got a bomb..." before they're all blown to smitherines.
DAY 4:
This is the quickest situation. The movements at times were slow and dreamy -- with Mark Snow doing and excellent job in the music to match -- to bring out the deja vu sensation.
Before entering the bank, Mulder asks Pam if he's seen her before. She denies it, giving up all efforts of trying to stop the inevitable outcome. While waiting in line, Mulder sees Bernard and continues that "He's got a bomb, he's got a bomb..." chant of his. Suddenly, all the little things click, and Mulder's instinct takes over. He calls Scully for help before handing the gun to Bernard, not wanting him to use his only weapon -- the bomb. Scully and Pam go into the bank, Scully not having any clue of what is going on. When hearing the sirens, Bernard panics (like before) and shoots at Mulder. He misses and kills Pam -- changing the ending.
OVERALL: 7
This was a very well done ep. I caught a few glitches here and there, but other than that, it was great. Prince Vince and John Shiban did some creative tag-team writing to do something so different. I've always wondered what XF would be like doing a "Ground Hog Day" type thing. I liked how everyday got faster with an increased memory of the previous day. Hats off to GA and DD for making the same thing so interesting and fun to watch.
The woman who played Pam is Carol Bernett's daughter -- I love that lady's humor! She reminded alot of philes of Natalie Imbruglia.
It just seems odd that Pam and Mulder were the only people who had any clue that the day was repeating. Even so, Mulder didn't know entirely, he was just going on his feelings.
The whole episode was worth it to see Mulder in soaking yellow pants and no shirt. I will never look at bananas the same way again ;-)
I want to know why, with all the different ending, Mulder and Scully couldn't kiss or say "I love you" just once! No fair!
It was fun to watch, but I don't recommend watching it again for another 4 months -- just because its repetative alot. It made me paranoid when I woke up on Monday -- did this day happen before? Just remember every time you get that deja vu feeling -- "zip-adee-do-daa".
DEATH-O-METER: 10
Exactly 10 character deaths! 2 counting the openeing scene, the 6 from 3 of the 4 days, and 2 from the day that was shown only by a flung newspaper. Gee, I never knew eternity was so long!
