On Saturday, October 14th, the Ottawa Gee Gees badminton team was at Queen’s University competing in the first of five regular season tournaments in the 2000-2001 season. Our competition for this tournament included Ryerson, York, and the host team, Queen’s. Our goal for the weekend was to beat all 3 teams, but we knew we had to play well to come home undefeated.
We started the day by disposing of Ryerson 10 matches to 1. Everyone played well against the Toronto-based university as the Gee Gees started the season on a positive note.
Our next opponent was Queen’s. In the past few years, defeating Queen’s would have been considered an upset for us. But with the combination of an improved Gee Gees team and a weaker Queen’s team, we have become the favorites. After losing a couple of matches that we had expected to win, the underdog Queen’s team was threatening to take the tie. But in the end, the Gee Gees were too much for Queen’s to handle as we won the tie 6 matches to 5.
Going into this tournament, we knew that York would probably be our toughest tie of the day. Heading into the final tie of the tournament, both teams had played well enough to defeat their opponents, Ryerson and Queen’s. The winner of this tie would head home with a perfect record of 3-0, while the loser would have to settle with 2 wins, 1 loss. After the 6 singles matches, we were out-matched 4 to 2, but all of our doubles teams played exceptionally well, winning 4 out of 5 matches. Defeating York 6 matches to 5 allowed us to fulfill our goal of coming back to Ottawa undefeated with 3 wins and no losses.
Although the badminton team was exhausted from the long day at Queen’s, we had a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction on the drive home. Our coach is very pleased with the team’s performance and results from our first regular season tournament.
The Gee Gees badminton team will be hosting their next regular season tournament on Saturday, November 4th, 2000. Matches will start around 10:00 am and will continue ‘til approximately 6:00 pm. Your Ottawa Gee Gees badminton team hopes to see you there cheering on the home team!
