On Sunday, Novermber 26th, the Ottawa Gee Gees badminton team was at Brock University in St. Catherine's competing in the third of five regular season tournaments in the 2000-2001 season. Our competition for this tournament included Waterloo, Western, and the host school Brock. With some of our top players unable to compete in this tournament, our goal for the weekend was to win 2 of the 3 ties.
We started the day by playing Waterloo. Inconsistent badminton play by our top men made the tie very close. Part way through the tie we were beginning to wonder if we might lose to the supposedly weaker Waterloo team. In the end, our team was able to win a few very close matches and we were able to overcome Waterloo's challenge by defeating them 7-4.
Without the full strength of our team in St. Caterine's, defeating Western this time around wasn't a realistic goal. Instead we used the matchup with Western as a way of getting familiar with their team and their line up. With both teams playing at their best, we should be the two best teams in the province. This is proven by the fact that we were both undefeated coming into this tournament. As expected, we were defeated quite easily by the #1 team in the OUA 11-0. Although we were beaten by Western this time, we are confident that we will be able to defeat Western if we end up playing them in the playoffs. Also, with this being our only loss of the season, we are still the #1 team in eastern Ontario.
Finally, we faced the weakest team of them all, Brock. As expected, we were able to leave St. Catherine's with a 7-1 win-loss record by defeating the hosts 10-1.
The Gee Gees badminton team’s next regular season tournament is on Sat/Sun, January 13/14th, 2001 at McMaster University in Hamilton where our competition will include Waterloo, Western, Brock, and the host team McMaster.
