Goodson Family
The Goodson's were among some of the early settlers in Cherokee County. One of the first families to arrive was that of Larkin Goodson (b. ca. 1820, North Carolina, d. Feb. 23, 1883), in 1856.
While Larkin was a small child his mother, Nancy, a widow, moved her family to Walker County, GA., where he married Elizabeth Betsie DOVER, daughter of William Simpson and Lucy A. DOOLEY Dover of Habersham County, GA. William Simpson Dover was the son of Francis and Mary POSEY Dover of South Carolina.
Francis served our country during the Revolutionary War as a private in the Continental Army. Larkin and his family moved to Cherokee County, Texas to make their home. He was a Mason and had membership in Jacksonville Lodge No. 108, A. F. & A. M. The Goodsons were farmers and settled in the Corinth-Craft area.
John Goodson served during the Civil War as a private in Co. I, 10th Reg't., Texas Dismounted Cavalry. He served at different times between Sept. 25, 1861, and April 5, 1864.
John, (b. 1841, Georgia, d. 1921 Cherokee County, TX) and Barbara Matilda, (b. 1845, Georgia, d. 1925 Cherokee County, TX) married in Walker County, GA. They came to Cherokee County with Larkin and Elizabeth Goodson in 1856.
James Polk Goodson joined Capt. R. B. Martin's Company of cavalry, furnishing his equipment at his own expense. This company was later known as Co. I, 10th Tex, Cav., through all the campaigns in the Army of Tennessee. It participated in the Battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Kenesaw Mountain, GA., in July, 1864, where he became a prisoner of war and was confined at Camp Morton Prison, Indiana, until the end of the war.

Hello, my name is Ivan Richardson. My mother was Anne Pearl GOODSON Richardson. I have been trying to get beyond the 1850 census to find where my gggrandfather Jesse W. GOODSON was born and who his parents and siblings were. According to the 1850 Baker County GA census:
Goodson, Jesse W. 33 M W Farmer b.Chattham Co. GA
" Sarah 30 F W HseKpg b. " " "
" George W.19 M W Son b. " " "
" Rufus 14 M W " b. Baker Co. GA
" Horatio 12 M W " b. " " "
" William 10 M W " b. " " "
" Joseph 9 M W " b. " " "

" Ishmael 6 M W " b. " " "
" Rachel 5 F W Dau. b. " " "
" Noah 3 M W Son b. " " "
" Mary 2 F W Dau. b. " " "
" Jesse 2/12 M W Son b. " " "
In the 1860 Gadsden Co. FL Census Jesse had moved his family to an area near Greensboro, Gadsden Co. FL.
On 13 Feb. 1858 Horatio Goodson, 3rd son of Jesse married Willa (Willie) Ann Pridgen in Gadsden Co. FL. I belive this to be my great grand mother and grand father.
Willa Ann Pridgen GOODSON had 3 sons Jesse H. b. 1859, John H. b. 1860, and Edwin Grandberry b. 3 Mar 1872. I know Willa was my GGrandmother but I haven't been able to prove that Horatio was Edwin's father. He was never in the census and owned no property as Horatio. Willa was always with her mother or children in the later census.
On my grandfather's death certificate his father is listed as John GOODSON. If Horatio's Name was also John I cannot make the tie.
The surnames from my North FL family are:
GOODSON, JOHNSON, PRIDGEN and VANLANDINGHAM.
I would appreciate any help on Jesse and Horatio.

Dear G. Ian,
I saw and read with much interest your e-mail of a couple of weeks or so ago, and was surprised of your mention of the town of Northumberland, u.k. It so happens that my great grandfather's name was North Thumberland Goodson. We always thought that was a curious name and did not know what the origin of it was, although I had been told that it was of English extraction. This particular branch of Goodsons eventually settled in Crawford County, Indiana, although I don't know where the stopovers were along the way.
Thanks for the historical background words.
Warmest Regards from your U.S. cousin...(No, we won't give back the colonies!)

Dear Phillip,
From your English correspondent,
I can't comment on the American research except to encourage you all towards the greatest accuracy. Wherever possible official records should be sought to confirm family records. Unfortunately, people lie, make mistakes, are illiterate, record nick-names instead of given names etc.
I know that a branch of my family went to the USA. I intend to check this out. I hope that we will be able to establish some definite connections.
Goodsons and their variants are relatively rare even in England. I have become used to being the only one for miles. It's nice to correspond with other Goodsons. You seem such a friendly lot as well.
Some thoughts on name variations. GODSON, GOODISON and GOODERSON are well known. The variants GOODSEN and GUDSON are probably due solely to illiteracy or cheek. (I write as a teacher). In East Anglia , our ancestral home, there are also Goodswens. Are we Scandinavian in origin? And there is the town of Gooderstone. Just to stir the waters there is an Ashkenazic Jewish cognate of Guterson. Nevertheless, there seem to be clear indications that Norfolk is our ancestral home. Contrary to common sense, which would suggest that there should be several origins and thence several unrelated streams of
East Anglia was, and is, a farming community. This seems to have reproduced itself in America. There also seems to be a distinct artistic tendency and a trait of leadership. The Goodsons I'm familiar with tend to be right - wing and independently minded. The few left - wingers are just as bolshie as their right-wing brothers and sisters.
I'm fascinated by the coincidence of names and places. Statistically it probably isn't significant but Robert seems to be a family name. There seem to be a lot of you who had something to do with Darlington or Durham (US). I was born at Darlington Memorial Hospital, Darlington, Co. Durham. This is north of Yorkshire and south of Northumberland. I am a native of Barnard Castle, Teesdale, Co.Durham but now live in Birmingham which is approx. two hundred miles due south of Barnard Castle.
It's absolutely wonderful to read of a church that has had Goodson Family members for so long. As a preacher I have to know more. Please forward this letter, Phillip. The Goodsons in England seem to be fairly Godless, although not entirely. Will Tabernacle pray for their English cousins?
On more topical issues I'm glad that Hurricane Floyd didn't do as much damage as expected. You seem, as a nation, to manage that for yourselves. We are horrified at the spate of gun-related mass murders you have had recently. We have had ours, but even counting in Northern Ireland at the height of the troubles we can't match you.
You have about five times our population and "N" times our space. Your murders should be somewhat less than five times ours. It's about eighty times ours or so my American colleague informed me. This takes effort. When are you going to learn. A gun gives the criminal and lunatic more power.
Despite the excesses of your culture America has much to give the world. Listen to your friends, we have just tightened our gun - control laws. Although by US standards they were always strict.
America reminds me of the little girl in the rhyme:-
" There was a little girl
Who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her for'ead.
And when she was good,
she was very, very good.
And when she was bad -
She was horrid."
It's easier to see from the outside.
A sobering thought, but I hope my letter has been of interest to you. Don't get lonely!
Every blessing, Ian

From: Phillip Goodson
The list has been so quiet the last week or so I that I would send a message, I'm starting to get lonely.
I have ordered about 10 books that cover several counties in Virginia, including Isle of Wight, Washington, and Botetourt in the hopes of finding fresh leads on the parentage of Larkin and Jacob. I also have a "History of Cherokee County", TX on the way, and am hoping that this will give fresh clues on the Larkin Goodson that went there from Walker County, GA.
I have also gotten the 1800 North Carolina Census index. There are five Goodson heads of household listed, and when I get the 1800 Virginia census I will almost certainly have the name of at least one of the parents of these two gentlemen and will know where the search should be concentrated. Give me your feedback on this. Do you think that this method makes sense? How would you do it? I am also hoping that I will be able to find information on the parents of Leander Goodson.
The information from these books will, of course, be posted to the website as soon as possible. I also have information on Joab Goodson, son of John A. and Nancy Garrett Goodson, and will be posting this information soon. I was directed to the information on Joab by Melba Clark of the list, and I sincerely thank her for the guidance. Joab served in the Confederate army during the Civil War, and wrote many letters home. I have an article that contains a transcription of many of these letters. Joab was an excellent writer, almost poetic, and I have enjoyed reading the letters, as I'm sure you will too.
If anyone knows of any good books with Goodson information and how to obtain them, please let me know and I will track them down and post the information to the site. You can also, if you would prefer, copy the information and send it to me and I will be happy to post it. Any information is greatly appreciated. Those of you who haven't yet can also send me information on who you are researching and I will post it to the website. Don't feel limited, I can always build your own page if necessary.
We now have 40 members on the list, not counting the subscription I took out for my work e-mail address. I appreciate all of your help in getting the word out, and I think that things are really starting to take off. Please continue to let others know about the site and the mailing list.
I also wanted to let you know that Robert and Joan Goodson of Black Mountina, NC are considering gaining access to the internet. I spoke with both them and their son last weekend, and am hoping that they do join us. For those of you who don't know Robert and Joan, they have been doing research on the Goodsons for over 40 years. They have an office in their home and have a bookcase full of well organized binders of family information from all over the country. In addition, they are two of the finest people that I have ever met and are extremely giving. They live on a farm that has been in the Goodson family for well a century, and attend Tabernacle Church, the same church attended by Larkin and Rachel and a church that has had Goodson members for nearly two centuries.
Hope you all are doing well and are having a good week. I will hopefully be able to post more information this weekend and will, as always, inform you when this is done.
