Dave Matthews and Friends on PBS
Dave Matthews Band will be recording a concert for PBS on September 11. The show, which will be performed at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, NJ, will feature several special guests. "Dave Matthews Band and Friends," as the event has been titled, has already sold out, but will air on PBS everywhere on September 29 -- check your local listings for exact times.
Riots In Hartford
Dave Matthews Band's 1999
Summer Tour ended on a low note when riots broke out in the
parking lot following the band's August 8 concert in
Connecticut's Hartford Meadows. Police were forced to fire rubber
bullets and use pepperspray on the frenetic crowd of almost 1,000
people. The previous night was hardly any better, when an even
larger number of riotous persons ravaged cars and retaliated
against local authorities.
Dave Matthews Band: Music For The People
Dave Matthews Band's new
book, Dave Matthews Band: Music for the People, became publicly available for sale in late
July. You can purchase the book
through Amazon Books for only $11.20, 20% off the cover price.
Readers will find Music for the People to be both a
shorter and easier read than 1998's Step Into the Light
band biography. The updated written path of Dave Matthews Band's
past doesn't do much more than its predecessor, except for the
book's "gigography," a near-complete listing of all the
band's concerts... ever. If you enjoyed Step Into the Light,
I'd recommend picking up Music for the People -- if you
didn't like DMB's earlier text outing, you won't find much more
enjoyment with the latest book.
Band Members In Side Projects
Drummer Carter Beauford
will shine on several musical releases this year, but they won't
be Dave Matthews Band albums. While Dave Matthews has had his
share of guesting on other bands' albums, and violinist Boyd
Tinsley and horn-master LeRoi Moore made cameos on Hootie's
latest, Musical Chairs, Carter Beauford is truly the band
member raking in the special appearances this year. Beauford is
already set to appear on Santana's new album Supernatural
(in stores June 15) and the new solo project from Blues
Traveler's John Popper (album due sometime later this year), but
news has recently spread about Flecktones bassist Victor Wooten's
new release, which will go on sale June 22. The DMB drummer will
guest on several tracks on Wooten's third solo album, titled Yin
Yang. Other guests include Flecktones members Bela Fleck, Roy
"Futureman" Wooten and Jeff Coffin, among others. A
video focusing more on just Beauford and Wooten is currently
being produced by Hudson Music and
will be in stores this September. Yin Yang is a double-CD
set boasting twenty tracks of Wooten's talent, which has garnered
him Bass Player Magazine's "Bass Player of the
Year" award for the third consecutive year, as well as a
multitude of other accomplishments.
Dave Matthews Band bassist Stefan Lessard has also brought in a
side project with the debut album from Charlottesville's Devon. Lessard provides bass on all the tracks while
Devon plays guitar and adds lead vocals. Percussion is provided
by Rod Coles, former drummer for The Ninth, once the band of
former DMB keyboardist Peter Griesar. The self-titled Devon
album will be available through mail order June 1.
Rolling Stone Slights DMB again!
Dave Matthews Band fans who may have perused the various reviews of the band's work in Rolling Stone magazine have probably felt like they've been riding a rollercoaster. Moderate ups (the recent, favorable review of the Luther College album) and death-defying lows (the unforgettable, unforgiveable review of Crash) have left more than one fan nauseated. But in the recent issue of Rolling Stone, the editors have released their listing of the decade's most influential albums in Essential Recordings of the '90s, and "Surprise!," no Dave Matthews Band. The authors did help to mention Dave Matthews (Band), along with Phish, as not having reached their climactic album just yet. But can anyone tell me who L7 or Iris DeMent are? Now that's influential.
New Opening acts for May (4.28.99)
Red Light Management announced Friday the new opening artists for the first leg of concerts that Dave Matthews Band will be playing in the 1999 Summer tour. Cracker, opening from May 1 through May 9, will play the first note of the band's tour, while DMB-opening-veteran and fellow Charlottesville native Corey Harris will return and play May 11 through May 16. Previously confirmed, Santana and the Roots will then take over at the New England stadium shows, which will last until the end of May. So far, opening guests for June, July and August have gone unannounced, with the exception of the Mile High Stadium concert, which will be opened by Alanis Morissette and Big Head Todd & the Monsters. The latter are rumored to be opening for several more concerts later in Dave Matthews Band's Summer tour. Keep it here at DMB News for the next word on opening artists.
Warehouse, DMB Fan Club
Dave Matthews Band fans may have finally had their wishes granted this week when DMB's Red Light Management debuted The Warehouse, the new, official fan club of the Dave Matthews Band. For a somewhat hefty $30/year, each DMB fan can be a member of the club that offers advanced ticket ordering, access to limited edition recordings, and much more. You can find out more information here.
Live @ Luther College
Dave Matthews Band fans and Tim Reynolds fans alike can look forward to the next live album from DMB's side, Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds | Live at Luther College, set for release on January 19, 1999. The acoustic album was recorded on February 6, 1996. Red Light announced the information of the live set today on the band's official website. The live release, which coincides with the start of the 1999 Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds tour, features twenty-three songs, including three unreleased DMB songs (one of which is the long-awaited "Granny") and Tim Reynolds' "Stream." You can view the cover art here, and the extensive setlist can be found here. Check back to DMB News soon for any additional information that may become available on the new album.

Guitarist Tim Reyenolds which appears on currently all of DMB's album is touring with the band this fall, and in the early months of `99 is sheduled to do a Dave and Tim acoustic tour.
Bela Felck opens for DMB (10.27.98)
Jazz rockers Bela Fleck & the Flecktones will return this November as an opening act for Dave Matthews Band. This run will be the band's third stint opening for DMB. Fleck & his jam band will begin with DMB on November 19 and open most of the shows through December 5. The Flecktones last opened during the 1997 Summer tour and also during DMB's latest New Year's Eve run back in 1996. While on tour opening for Dave Matthews Band, banjoist Bela Fleck and the various members of the Flecktones can often be found guesting with the band. Fleck donated his musical talents on Before These Crowded Streets, and DMB frontman Dave Matthews returned the favor by lending his vocals to two tracks of the Flecktones' latest release, Left of Cool.
Death strikes Carter's Mother (10.5.98)
On Monday, Oct.5 Carters mother passed away. Mrs. Beauford was a big contributer
in the early years for the band, by supplying practice space in her garage.
Two shows have been cancelled due to her death.
