Last Game
June 19, 1999

vs.

Dallas 2 Buffalo 1

The Dallas Stars finally capture hockey's ultimate prize with Brett Hull's game winning goal 14:51 into triple overtime, giving the Stars the 2-1 final score, as Dallas claimed the series, four games to two.

The game was only 22 seconds shorter than the longest Finals game in history, set back in 1990 between Edmonton and Boston.

Dallas also became the first team since the 1994 New York Rangers to win both the President's Trophy and the Stanley Cup in the same season. The Stars collected much hardware this season, having also won the Jenning's trophy as well.

Joe Nieuwendyk edged out goaltender Ed Belfour as the winner of the Conn-Smyth trophy for the playoff MVP, having scored a league leading 11 goals in the postseason. Belfour had allowed only three goals in the last three games of the series.

The Sabres, however, sparked a note of controversy as they contested that Hull's skate was in the crease prior to the shot. The goal was not reviewed until after the presentation of the Cup, where NHL officials stated that the goal was indeed valid, as Hull still had complete possession of the puck, even after a rebound shot of Dominik Hasek's glove.

Both goaltenders pulled off stellar performances, keeping the game tied since the waning minutes of the second period. The two teams combined for 104 shots, on goal, with Belfour stopping 53 shots to Hasek's 48.

Jere Lehtinen began the scoring with an incredible goal at 8:09 of the first period. Mike Modano set up a pass in the neutral zone to Jere Lehtinen, who zipped down the left wing side. Lentinen sent a quick flip shot from along the goal line that bounced off Hasek's leg pad and slipped between the goaltender and the right post.

The Sabres fired 25 shots on goal at Belfour in the first two periods, before finally scoring after 130:44 of being shutout by the Dallas goaltender. Keith Primeau gave the puck to Stu Barnes, who crossed the blue line and headed up the right side. Barnes reached the face-off circle and sent a wrist shot that sailed over a diving Craig Ludwig and past Belfour on the stick side.

Barnes had scored seven goals in 11 games, following a 31-game goal-less streak.

From that point on, it was a duel of the goaltenders, as neither player was going to give up the game-winner.

The two teams played cautiously in the first overtime, combining for only 10 shots on goal. Belfour came up with a great save at 12:51, blocking Richard Smelhik's shot after it deflected off Derian Hatcher's stick.

The two teams became a bit more agressive in the second overtime, but the goalies also became stingier. James Patrick almost netted the game-winner at 2:16 with a monster shot from the point that bounced off the crossbar.

But Hull would provide the game-winner as he scored on his own rebound at 14:51 in the third overtime. Lehtinen had fired a wrist shot from the left circle, that Hasek was able to block. Hull was postioned in front of the crease, and sent a shot that bounced off Hasek's glove as Hasek was still lying on the ice. Hull collected the rebound and sent it in off the left post over Hasek's foot.

The Sabres became upset and charged that the goal was invalid because Hull was in the crease before the puck. It was ruled that Hull's left skate was in the crease, but because he had already made a play on the puck and still retained posession of the puck, it was a legal goal.

This is the first Stanley Cup in Stars' franchise history, and the first for many of its' players.
