West Point Lodge 758, F & A M

The Bates Masonic Scholarship Fund was created to assist the youth of Cullman County in furthering their education, particularly those who might not have the means otherwise. The Fund was named in honor of a father and son who have made significant contributions to Cullman County. The late Brother Lem Bates was known as "Mr. Mason" for many years. He served his home lodge, Trimble 739, in many capacities, including several terms as Worshipful Master, and served the 6th District as District Lecturer for many years. But Brother Lem is best remembered for his ability to teach the Masonic lessons to newly made Brothers. He could make the student see and feel the lesson as he taught it, so that he would come to understand the symbolism and significance of every part. His son, Brother Robert Bates, currently serves as Clerk of the Circuit Court in Cullman County. He too has served Trimble Lodge in every capacity, including Worshipful Master and was also District 6 Lecturer for 19 years. He also served the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge as a member of the Committee on Work for one year. The high regard that the brethren of Cullman County have for these men led to the Fund being named in their honors.
Students who are interested in applying for the Scholarship can pick up an application from the guidance counselor of their school. The questions asked pertain to more than to just academics, although that area is certainly important. He or she is asked about extra-cirricular activities, church, social and fraternal organizations, community involvment and his or hers plans for the future. The completed form is returned to any lodge member who forwards it to the selection committee. Point values are assigned according to the answers given and the application is scored and passed on to an investigating committee which selects 3 finalists. The finalists then appear before a panel comprised of several distinguished members of the community which selects the winner.
All contributions made to The Bates Masonic Scholarship Fund are tax deductible under provisions of the Internal Revenue Service. Contact us and we'll tell you how you can contribute to this very worthy fund.
