Anne

Buffy fights demons from hell in LA after running away and going under the name "Anne".

The remaining members of the Scooby Gang, (basically Xander, Willow, and Oz) fight off a vampire that they can't seem to kill. Willow wonders if Buffy will be coming back due to the start of school. Each is giddy about the start of school for their own reasons, and they recall that Buffy can't come back because she was expelled.

Buffy is in LA dreaming of Angel and working as a waitress at a diner under the name 'Anne'. At work, she encounters a customer that seems to recognize her. She is one half of a young couple and is called Lily. Buffy runs out of the diner in order to avoid confrontation.

School has begun and Cordelia approaches Willow asking where Xander is. She seems excited to see him and does the whole 'checking up on Xander' thing. Willow sees Oz and wonders why he's there, being that he was supposed to have graduated. He has to repeat his senior year along with Willow and Xander. They find Xander, who is 'siked' to see Cordelia. (Geekiness commences) Cordelia and Xander meet. A very uncomfortable silence follows. Giles receives a call about a possible Buffy siting. We learn that Giles has followed nine leads as to her whereabouts over the past summer.

Lily finds Buffy again and addresses her by her name. Lily tells Buffy that she was part of the cult that worshipped vampires. (LTM) She thanks her for saving her life and assures her that she won't turn her in. Lily invites her to a rave, but Buffy declines. They see an old man stumble into the street and almost get hit by a car. Buffy pushes him out of the way and gets hit. She can't handle the attention and runs away. She encounters a man pushing a safe haven for runaways. His name is Ken and he gives her a flier for 'Family Home'. Meanwhile at the Bronze, Xander, Willow, and Oz decide to use Cordelia as bait to speed up the vampire killage.

Joyce is at home writing bills when Giles knocks on the door to inform her of his lack of finding Buffy. He tells her not to blame herself for her running away. She assures him that he need not worry. She doesn't blame herself, she blames him. She resents his and her relationship in accordance to her lack of a relationship with her daughter.

Lily finds Buffy at the diner and tells her that Ricky (her boyfriend) has gone missing. Lily takes Buffy to a blood bank they often visit looking for him. They split up and Buffy searches through an ally only to find the old man from the previous evening dead. She inspects the body and finds that he has the same tattoo that Ricky had. She goes to her place where Lily is waiting and informs her that he might be dead. She tells her that something weird is going on, due to his old age. Lily wonders if Buffy has brought this with her. Lily walks out. Outside, the Ken guy approaches Lily and asks if she needs help. He tells her that Ricky is waiting for her at 'Family Home'. So, she goes with him.

Buffy inspects the blood bank, thinking that it may be the cause of the problem. The nurse walks in on her and Buffy makes her tell her what she has done too people. Blood files are marked as 'candidates'. The nurse tells her that she has given the names of healthy people to the Ken guy.

The Scooby Gang is in the cemetery using Cordy as bait. They hide while Cordelia acts 'baity'. Xander and Cordelia begin to argue.

Meanwhile, Ken leads Lily into a room with a bath like thing. Buffy is at the door attempting the undercover thing. Eventually she gives up and breaks in. But, it is too late. Lily is sucked into Hell. Ken and Buffy follow after her. They land in a concrete room with Ken. Ken is a hell demon and he takes off his face. Buffy and Lily run into a factory centered in Hell where people are working. Ken follows them and knocks them out.

Xander and Cordelia continue to argue while Willow is suddenly attacked. Xander and Cordy fall onto each other and simultaneously kill the vamp. They follow this with a passionate kiss.

Buffy and Lily are in a jail room. Ken informs them that time moves quickly in Hell. A day on Earth is like a hundred years in Hell. They are taken into a room to be conformed by hell-demons. The demons ask each person 'who they are' and expect them to answer 'no one'. It comes to Buffy and she answers, "I'm Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. And you are?" They run away and put together a plan to get out. Buffy runs through the work station to distract the guys while Lily and the others try to escape. She fights with many demons simultaneously while Ken watches on. He gets pissed because she is fighting back and decides to handle her himself. He gets Lily and brings her to Buffy's attention. Lily takes a stand and pushes him off the platform. Buffy frees the others and kills Ken. They escape and the entrance seals over.

Buffy decides it's time to return to Sunnydale and give her apartment to Lily. Lily is going to take over Buffy's job and asks if she can take her name. Buffy returns finally and embraces her mother at the door.

I know, way harsh. But, the first time I saw this, I actually lost my faith in Buffy. It took quite a while to get it back. The plot worked, with the whole hell thing; it worked well in theory. But, you put it all together and you get: blah. Pure un-entertainment. The Buffy dream of Angel was good and so was the Oz/Willow exchanges. But, the absolute worst part of the episode was the reuniting of Xander and Cordy. The whole 'being happy to see each other' was way overdone. The 'I'll make him remember' line made me wanna yack. Overall, a very sad season premere.
