Buffy is fighting a vamp at the pumpkin patch and she has to resort to all kinds of creativity to defeat him. Unbeknownst to her, Spike is video taping her technique so he can study how to kill her. She stakes the vamp and the video is taken to Spike. He watches it many times to assess her skills.
Buffy goes to the Bronze to meet Angel, but she sees him laughing with Cordelia; who's discussing her problems with Devon. Buffy decides to leave, but she's not in date mode.
At school, Snyder forces the Scooby Gang to sign up to take kids trick or treating. While they discuss it, Xander gets up to get a drink. Larry approaches him and inquires about whether Buffy would go out with him. He says she's easy and Xander defends her. Larry goes into pummel mode and Buffy saves him. He isn't too happy.
Buffy is sad over Angel not being as close as she would like, so she and Willow head to the library to get Giles's Watcher's Diary so they can read up on Angel and his past. Buffy distracts him while Willow gets the books. They go to the library and read up on Angel. They find that he was a young man when girls were regal and wore long gowns and such.
The new found need for Halloween garab prompts them to go shopping for costumes. Xander goes with cheapo army guy and Buffy has her eyes on a beautiful Victorian-like piece.
Drusilla predicts that everything will be changing soon. Meanwhile, the costume shop owner, Ethan, pledges to a Greek God.
Buffy and Willow dress up and meet Xander at her house. He is amazed by Buffy, but Willow puts on a ghost costume instead of the slayer costume she had on before. The gang each gets their own group of kids and they go out.
When Willow is with her group, Ethan casts a final spell, so as they are getting candy, they all change into their costumes. A few turn into goblins and Willow falls to the ground and becomes a ghost. (and rises in her sexy slayer outfit).
Willow gets up and tries to find Buffy and Xander. She finds Buffy and she has turned into an 18th century lady who doesn't know anything about anything. Xander is an army guy with a real rifle and makes it his duty to protect the women.
They run to Buffy's house for cover and Willow tries to tell that they know each other and that her real name is Buffy. Angel and Cordelia show up and Willow explains to them that they are all different. They devise a plan. Buffy goes with Angel and Willow goes to see Giles. Buffy sees Angel in vamp mode and gets scared and runs out.
When Willow tells Giles about Ethan's costume shop, he figures things out. Meanwhile, the whole gang goes out to find Buffy and Spike hears how she is weak.
Giles goes to Ethan's and acknowledges that they know each other. They have a reminisant chat or such. At the same moment Buffy is attacked in an alley way and Xander comes to her rescue. (hence closure) Spike and his gang come up behind them, so Angel grabs Buffy and they seek an empty warehouse.
Ethan talks of how he doubts Giles's pure and good act, and Giles order him to leave Sunnydale. Ethan refuses. So, Giles resorts to beating him.
Spike corners Buffy while his minions hold back Angel and Xander and such. He pins her down and sets out to bite her. At the same instance, Giles kicks Ethan and discovers how to stop the spell. He breaks the statue and Buffy comes back full force. She commences in beating up Spike. He runs off and the gang is left with a bunch of scared children. And they remember the whole thing.
Willow wakes up in the same spot where she fell and walks home. As she is walking, Oz sees her in her slayer outfit and is instantly smitten once more.
Buffy and Angel talk at her house and he asks why she wanted to dress like that. He tells her that he hated those women and prefers her to any of them.
The next morning, Giles goes to Ethans costume shop, which is deserted, and he finds a not form Ethan saying that he'll see him soon.
