Proper isolation protocol should consist of a general health examination and fecal exam prior to entering the building where the collection is housed. Follow these examinations the animal should be placed in a basic enclosure that is housed in an entirely different location within the building that does not contain an environmental control that is shared with the rest of the building. All items used to clean the enclosure should be disposable or kept in this room, never being removed for any reason. Rubber gloves should be worn when handling the animal or cleaning its enclosure and all waste matter should be disposed of outside of the building.
Cleaning utensils should consist of disposable paper towels and all cleaning solutions should remain in the room. Refilling the bottle of cleaning solution should be done inside the room. Protective garments, such as a gown or apron should be worn over clothing and left in the room. All cleaning garments and utensils should be changed with each new arrival.
The new reptile should remain in isolation for a period of not less than 90 days to ensure that no parasites or disease are present. If an isolated animal shows any signs of illness it should be removed from the building and taken to an experienced veterinarian right away. Following these procedures will help to ensure the continued health of your existing collection and allow you to safely introduce new animals.
