Superfly's links for Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix was born on November 27, 1942 in Seattle. After being raised by his father, Jimi played in every kind of band from local to famous, including Sam Cooke, The Isley Brothers, and Little Richard. After moving to New York and settling in Greenwich Village, Hendrix was exposed to a whole new type of music. In 1966, he formed a band and began to sing. It was then that Chad Chandler saw him and was blown away. In late September, they were off to London, where he changed the spelling of his name( it was Jimmy before )and began to search for new bandmates. He found Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, and on October 6, 1966 The Jimi Henrix Experience was formed. After blowing Britian away they came to the US, playing at the Monterey Pop Festival and touring all over. Then in June of 1969, Jimi and Mitch regrouped and played with The Band Of Gypsy's. They shocked and amazed the audience at Woodstock
whith Jimi's deconstruction of the American Anthem. With the Civel Rights Movement at bay and the Veitnam War at it's peak, the statement was compelling.
After playing with the Gypsy's, Hendrix sang with Cry of Love. After Bassist Billy Cox became ill, Jimi took him to London to recouperate. Jimi stayed with a girlfriend, wanting to rest up for the trip back to America. He took enough sleeping pills to sleep through the next day, but accidentally overdosed. The pills caused him to suffocate. On September 17, 1970, Jimi Hendrix was dead.
Jimi was a legend, and his legend lives on.
