T-Bird Stuff
This summer the SuperCharger started to get noisy and would whistle when I shut the car off. I did some research and found out the average life span for the SuperCharger is 105,000 miles. At that time I had almost 106,000 miles.
Ford dealers want about $2,500. A rebuilt SuperCharger is about $1,100. I found a New “93” SuperCharger for $625 and installed it myself.
It took me about 8 hours, a full Saturday, to get everything out of the car. One big hang up was the COWL around the windshield wipers. While I had everything out of the car, I poured Paint thinner in the Intercooler and let it soak overnight. This cleaned out a lot of oil and gook that accumulates over time.
I did not have a Spanner wrench to get the Spanner nut off the SuperCharger top. Evidently knucklehead Gary did not tighten this down properly either. When I went to take it off, it came off with just my bare hands. When I put it back on, I just used a very large flat screwdriver and a hammer to TAP on tightly. This saved myself from buying a $30 tool that will be used infrequently.
Putting everything back together took only about 4 hours. When I started it up, it would not idle at all. I drove it around a few miles and it seemed to get better. I drove it to work the next day, but it did not get any better.
I tightened up the nuts on the SuperCharger upper and lower tubes. The car still would not idle. At this point I was worried that there was a vacuum leak where the SuperCharger attaches to the engine, and I would have to do this all over again.
Luckily, I double checked all the vacuum hoses again. I found one all the way in the back by the firewall that was barely reachable, it had come off when I was installing everything. I put the hose back on, and the car has run perfectly since.
