Mustang Seat Review for V65 Magna

This is the letter I sent to Mustang when I returned the seat. In short, it is a very nice seat, as long as you are 5'8" or less. Hopefully this will help you decide if this seat is for you. Mustang did refund my money and it was a nice seat, it just wasn't for me.

Thursday, July 31, 1997 To Whom It May Concern:

I am returning the Mustang "Regal Duke" seat for the following reasons.

  • 1. I expected the seat to provide "More" comfort than the 14 year old stock seat. It did not. I actually hurt in more places now than I did before. My thighs hurt and my back hurt with the Mustang seat. Even when using the Highway pegs I couldn't fully stretch my legs out as before. The seat is too far forward and too low. (I'm only 5'10" with a 33" inseam.)
  • 2. The seat is Really Good Looking, however that doesn't outweigh the discomfort I experience with it.
  • 3. If it was a less expensive seat(and came with it's own hardware) I may have kept it for around town use. However that wasn't an option for $220
  • 4. My girlfriend also complained of Leg pain with the Mustang seat. She said as far as comfort goes, the old seat is better. I was trying to get something Better for her, so she would be more willing to take longer trips. That was the main purpose of my purchase. The stock seat I have is still in very good condition.
  • 5. The seat was also much more difficult to Lock into place than the stock seat. Not a big deal once in awhile, but if you need to do it on the road, it would be very frustrating.
  • 6. With this seat being lower than stock it was nice because, the short windshield I have "worked" better. This lower seat put me right in the pocket, the air went just over my helmet. The seat also causes me to sit farther forward, which with the lower seat height, makes handling the bike easier.(Twisty roads are more fun) However, that would be great for short trips. But the low and forward seating makes for a very uncomfortable arrangement. It's a shame, I had been looking forward to this purchase for quite sometime.
  • 7. The Regal Duke does get rid of "1" problem I have with the stock seat. With the stock seat the passenger tends to slide forward very easily during braking. That was not a problem with the Regal Duke.
  • 8. Overall there is just more ROOM with the stock seat. I actually compared measurements. The drivers seat area is a couple inches wider, the other measurements weren't as dramatic though. Somehow it must just be the seating position. My girlfriend tried to be nice and say whatever I want, and that maybe the seat would get "broke in" for her. That was before I drove it to work for 3 days. The pain in my legs is just too much. I still love the "looks" of this seat, but I just can't deal with the pain.

Finally I want to note that I am "NOT" complaining. I am just trying to share my experience so that hopefully you will come out with a seat for my 1984 Honda V-65 Magna, that is not just "Pretty" but also "Comfy". For your information, I am 29 years old, 5'10" and 165lbs. My girlfriend is 26, 5'9" and 145lbs. I would not hesitate to try a Mustang seat again. If you come up with a new model I will look into it. As for now, I'm going to try those "Gel" inserts on the stock seat.

  • Stock seat and Mustang Seat Side by Side

Notice how the Mustang seat is not as wide as the stock seat.

Stock seat and Mustang seat End to End

Notice how the Mustang seat pushes the driver farther forward. There is also less room for the passenger.

Now, see how Good it looked "ON" the bike!

It's just a shame the seat was not comfortable for myself or my wife. I hated to return it, but my back was much happier after the Mustang seat was gone.
