Julius "Mwalimu" Nyerere
The First President of Tanzania
Like Jomo Kenyatta of neighboring Kenya, President Nyerere was much beloved in East Africa for wisdom and leadership in the last years of colonial British rule and for his wise leadership as the first president of Tanzania. When he died on October 14, 1999, all East Africa flew flags at half staff. One African newspaper headline simply said: "Mwalimu is Gone." (Mwalimu is the Swahili word which means "the Teacher.")
