Married Eliza Jane Dowdy Jan. 2 , 1862 , his brother Rev. J.R. Isbell officiated.This young couples families were both in sympathy with the Union.

Their Children : William Joseph ( 1863 - 1925 ) , Westley Sherman (1865 - 1956 ) , "Dee" ( 1867 - 1939 ) Caldonia ( 1870 - 1942 ) , John Birdwell ( 1872 - 1960 ) , Zachary ( 1875 - ? ) , Minerva ( ? - ? ) Nora ( ? - ? ) , Arthur Levi ( 1883 - 1964 ) , Leander ( 1885 - 1965 )

After the Civil War a Major Buck, an army friend , unmarried - and a school teacher , came down to live with them and started the Isbell School for all children of the Union Persuation to get a good education without problems arising. The school was well known at the time. A Captain Baker and a Mr. Waddell also taught there.
