John Cornelius Burlin

John Cornelius Burlin was born 1827 in North Carolina.  He married Sarah Jane Morphis on October 6th, 1858 – Marshall County, Tennessee.

He enlisted on February 11, 1863 At Murfreesboro, Tennessee in Company “F”, 1st Regiment, Alabama and Tennessee Vidette Cavalry, Army of the Cumberland. Muster Rolls indicate: June 30th 1863 to October 31st 1863 – Company “M” the Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry; January 1864 to February 1864 – Company “F” 1st Regiment, Alabama & Tennessee Vidette Cavalry; March 1864 to April 1864 – (In Hospital) Company “M” 5th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry; June 1864 – Company “F”, 1st Regiment, Alabama & Tennessee Cavalry; Mustered out of service at Stevenson Alabama ate the age of 37.  John Burlin also served with his brother-in-law Henry Clay Morphis in Company “F” 1st Regiment, Alabama & Tennessee Vidette Cavalry.

I, John C. Burlin born in North Carolina aged Thirty-seven years, and by occupation a Farmer.  Do herby acknowledge to have volunteered this eleventh day of February 186? To serve as a soldier in the Army of the United States of American for the period of Twelve months unless sooner discharged by proper authority:  do also agree to accept such bounty, pay, ratios, and clothing, as are, or may be established by law for volunteers.  And I, John C. Burlin do solemnly swear, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whomsoever; and that I will observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the order of the appointed over me, according to the rules and articles of War.

I certify, on Honor, That I have carefully examined the above named volunteer, agreeably to the General Regulations of the Army, and that in my opinion he is free from all bodily defects and mental infirmity, which would in any way disqualify him from performing the duties of a soldier.

I certify, on honor, That I have minutely inspected the volunteer John C. Burlin previously to his enlistment, and that he was entirely sober when enlisted; that to the best of my judgment and belief, he is of lawful age; and that in accepting him as duly qualified to perform the duties of an able-bodied soldier, I have strictly observed the Regulations which govern the recruiting service.  This soldier, has Dark eyes, Dark hair, Dark complexion, is 6 feet inches high.
